WHAT WE BELIEVE

ABOUT THE BIBLE

The Bible is God’s word to all mankind. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living, and is the final authority on all matters upon which it teaches. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. No other writings are vested with such divine authority.

2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105, 160; Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5

ABOUT GOD

There is only one God, Creator and Ruler of the universe. He exists eternally as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each fully God yet each personally distinct from the other.

Genesis 1:1, 26-27; Genesis 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14

ABOUT MANKIND

We are all created in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. We are the supreme object of God’s creation – we matter deeply to Him. Although mankind has tremendous potential for good, we are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". This attitude separates us from God. Central to the message of the Bible is that God loves us, and invites us to live in a love relationship with Him that is personal and real, and to live in community with each other.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2

ABOUT ETERNITY

We were all created to exist forever, and death seals the eternal destiny of each person. We will exist eternally either separated from God by sin, or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. The place of eternal separation from God is called Hell. Heaven is the place of eternal union and eternal life with God.

John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matthew 25:41; Revelation 21:27

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is co-equal with God, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless human life, and willingly took upon Himself all of our sins by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven and is at the right hand of the Father as our advocate and mediator. Some day, He will return again to earth to consummate history and to fulfill the eternal plan of God.

Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13

ABOUT SALVATION

Apart from Jesus Christ, we are all spiritually lost and, because of our sin, deserve the judgement of God. We can never make up for our sin or earn salvation by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can we be saved from sin’s penalty. The gift of salvation is experienced and eternal life begins the moment we receive Jesus Christ into our life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:12; 14:6; Titus 3:5; Romans 5:1

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit, third Person of the Trinity, is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make mankind aware of our need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christ-follower from the moment of salvation and enables them to live a life dedicated to serving God and other people. He provides Christ-followers with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance for doing what is right in leading a Christ-like life. He also gives them spiritual gifts with which to serve the church and reach out to a lost and needy world.

ABOUT THE CHURCH

All believers are members of the body of Christ, the one true church universal. Spiritual unity is to be expressed among Christ-followers by acceptance and love of one another across ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, national, generational, gender, and denominational lines.

John 15:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Colossians 1:4-6; 1 Peter 2:9; Acts 2:41; Acts 2:46; Colossians 3:12-14
